My younger one loves to cook make a mess. She experiments with different ingredients in the kitchen. I do allow her to carry on her experiments as she feels very happy after we all taste her final outcome. She is 11 and mainly tries non-heat cooking recipes but I help her if she wants to cook anything on the burner.

If your kids like cooking, encourage them as it is a great way to unleash the creativity in them.

Points to keep in mind related to cooking with kids-

  1. If you are worried about the mess, teach them to clean too. Make cleaning easy and fun for them.
  2. Make sure to be there with them when they are using heat or gadgets like a sandwich maker or toaster etc.
  3. If they are struggling, show them the task first and then let them do it on their own.
  4. Little older kids can do a lot of things including cutting and chopping but avoid this with small kids. They can do simple things like squeezing a lemon or mixing different ingredients.
  5. It is also the best way to teach them some nutrition tips. Ask them questions related to healthy and non-healthy food while they are cooking.

Simple and easy non-heat cooking recipes-

  1. Coconut ladoos– As it is festive season, I am starting with something which my girls love to make every Diwali. It is a very simple recipe and mainly involves only mixing and rolling. Use freshly grated coconut and condensed milk. I lightly fry the coconut until it’s dried and give it to them. They mix the condensed milk in it and make ladoos out of them.
  2. Bhel puri – It is another simple and no heat cooking recipe which you can try even with younger kids. Collect different ingredients like puffed rice, peanuts, sev, and chopped vegetables like onion, tomato, and boiled potato. (My elder one even chops the veggies). They can mix everything together with chutneys and bhel puri is ready.
  3. Summer coolers/drinks- This is something which my girls try in summer holidays. Summer drinks can be made with different ingredients and in different flavours. You can use tang, roohafza and fruit squashes and add fresh fruits or even ice cream with soda to create different coolers.
  4. Vegetable sandwiches – Kids are going to enjoy this one as it’s not only easy but yummy too. With younger kids, try no grill sandwiches. They can apply cheese or mayonnaise and add vegetable slices to make a sandwich. Older ones can even grill it in the toaster.
  5. Fruit chaat – No heat and easy recipe. Kids can slice the fruits and mix/toss them together to create yummy fruit chaat. Add sprouts to increase the healthy quotient.

Apart from all this, kids can also try milkshakes, salads and no-bake cakes and cookies.

I am sharing a yummy, healthy and easy recipe which we all love and kids can make it easily too.

My daughters love lemonade and we experiment a lot with different ingredients. This one is our favourite recipe. Easy to make, yummy and healthy too. This can be made with different fruits. I am sharing the one we made with Kiwi.
Ingredients
  • 2 cups diced kiwi (about 3 medium)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • ½ cups mint leaves, chopped
  • ½ - 1 cup freshly-squeezed lemon
  • 4 cups cold water
  • Ice
Instructions
  1. In a saucepan, mix and heat water and sugar for some time. Once the sugar is nicely mixed, remove from heat and add chopped mint leaves. Let it cool for some time.
  2. Take kiwifruit and cut into chunks. Make a puree and add it to the sugar water. Refrigerate it until cold. Add lemon juice. Lemon can be added according to taste.
  3. Serve chilled by adding water and ice.
Notes
It is a very good source of Vitamin C and fiber. The best part is that kids can easily make it.
