There will be so many times you feel like you ‘ve failed, but in the eyes, heart, and mind of your child, you are a super mom.– Stephanie Precourt

This quote is perfect for our next creative mom whom we are featuring today. She is a super mom who not only takes care of her two boys, a tween, and a toddler but also runs three different classes.

Today we are featuring Soma Mukherjee, an artist at heart, an ex-corporate world girl, but first and foremost a mom.

What is your background?

I am HM professional & a life science graduate. My last qualification is a short certification course on HR from Ryerson University, Toronto, Canada. I have 8 years of work experience in different corporate worlds. My Last job was with IBM as an administrator.

How and when did you start your art classes? Give us some details about it.

Well, it started off during a conversation with some of the mommies at our Knightsbridge Apartment 2 years back. I started my own art classes on 1st July 2015.

I came to know that there are quite a few interested kids for a drawing class. Mothers those who r having infants & toddlers as a second child at home are not able to take their elder kids out of the Apartment. And I being an art lover took this up as a challenge. Challenge why? Because I have never learnt art but during my childhood, I was so passionate about this subject that I used to win the camel colour contests.
So I gave it a thought, did some research work as to how to teach the subject drawing to a child who is 4 or 5yrs & a kid who is 9 years or 10years.

I made a curriculum of my own, gave the name of my classes as Drawing Desk’s Classes which yu can find at my Fb page.

I love to motivate my kids whatever they draw from their heart because I strongly felt this that during my childhood whoever used to motivate me during my Drawing/painting, my art used to be complete with a satisfaction. So what I do – I take the snapshots of each & every drawing at the end of my class & put them on my above mentioned on my FB page.

Tell us about other 2 classes you run.

I also run dance classes called ‘Creative dancing’ for kids and prepare them to perform at different festivals and functions. They have performed on occasions like Durga puja, Saraswati Puja mainly based on Rabindranath songs.

I also take cookery weekend workshops for kids who love cooking. My another passion is cooking and as I am from HM background,  I started my cookery classes for kids called ‘Young chefs weekend workshops’.

What is your vision or where do you see yourself in next 5 years?

I started off with 5 kids at my desk.Today I am taking classes outside my apartment too. So together i am managing 38 kids? Hope to grow it more in coming years.

How did you start your journey as a teacher?

My journey as an art teacher was completely on the need basis. There was a demand for a drawing teacher in our apartment for kids above 4yrs to 10yrs. I chose it because I wanted to continue my passion (for art) through these kids.

Why did you choose to leave a corporate world and start these classes?

I chose to leave the corporate world because I wanted to give maximum time to my children. And at the same time, I wanted to continue my passion for art, cooking & dance. Hence I decided to start off art classes for my apartment kids. Today I take classes in other apartments too. I started my art classes with 5 students & now I manage 40 students.

Tell us something about your family and is it difficult to leave your job and become a stay at home mom?

I didn’t find any difficulty in leaving my corporate job & becoming a stay at home mom because I love to enjoy motherhood. My family supported me in this.

What advice/tips would you like to give to other moms who are struggling between work and home?

The advice which I would like to give to moms who are struggling between home & office is that opt for a stay at home mom if your family is not financially dependent on you. This is the time they need you. Later on, they would want their freedom.
