“The world is full of wonderful things you haven’t seen yet. Don’t ever give up on the chance to see them.” – JK Rowling

Summer vacations and travelling are like synonyms. We started planning our holiday long time back but nothing was finalised till April end. All of us had different preferences and suggestions. My daughters wanted to go to Singapore and I wanted to see Andaman and Nicobar islands. My husband suggested Munnar but we were not sure as we recently went to Kerala.

Finally, when nothing worked out, a trip to Munnar was finalised. As soon as we entered Munnar, the scenic beauty, the tea plantations, and above all the beautiful weather was all worth the visit.  Not to forget, Munnar is the most popular hill station in South India.

Munnar

Our first trip to Kerala was in October last year. We went mainly to back waters and explored the city of Kochi. We took a flight from Bangalore to Kochi and then travelled by car to Alleppey and Kumarakom.

The trip from Bangalore to Munnar.

Bangalore – Coimbatore – Munnar

This time we decided to drive down to Munnar. We started from Bangalore in morning around 10 am and reached Coimbatore in the evening and stayed there for the night.

We started for Munnar next day morning and reached around 5 in the evening. On the way, we crossed a very beautiful place between Pollachi and Udumalpet where we were surrounded by big windmills all around us. I have never seen so many windmills at one place before this and kids also enjoyed this beautiful drive.

We crossed many national parks on the way which made the trip more exciting. We crossed Annamalai wild life sanctuary on the border of Tamil Nadu and Kerala and it changed to Chinnar wild life sanctuary as we entered Kerala. Maryoor sandalwood forests and Chinnar wild life sanctuary was beautiful.

Places we saw in Munnar-

  1. A visit to tea plantations- Munnar is surrounded by beautiful tea gardens and that makes it more beautiful. We went for a tea plantation visit and kids enjoyed the most as it was like a trekking through the mountains. Munnar
  2. Tata Tea Museum– This is located near the main city of Munnar and we saw it at the end of the trip. This is also something which will be interesting for kids. They get to see the whole process of tea making from scratch. Starting from leaves to the final product.
  3. Top station- It is a view point from where you can get to see the nature at its best. We stopped here while entering Munnar and on the way back too. Sometimes it gets surrounded by clouds and fog making it a must see as it is a different experience. Munnar
  4. Mattupetty Dam– It is a beautiful dam which is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Munnar. Boating facility is also available. mUNNAR
  5. Punarjani traditional village- It is famous for its Kathakali dance performances, traditional martial arts show called ‘Kalarippayattu’, and different popular Kerala massages. We enjoyed watching the famous Kerala shows and the best part was that it was just walking distance from our resort. mUNNARmUNNAR
  6. Spice garden visit- Our resort arranged for a spice garden visit for us and it was a different experience to walk through the spice gardens and experience the beauty of the garden. Kids loved this visit the most as they not only got to learn about different spices but also collected few spices to show their friends back home. Munnar
  7. Kundala Lake– This is a lake which mainly fills up when it’s raining. It is a beautiful lake with boating facility but as it was raining, the boating was on a hold when we were there. We enjoyed the natural beauty and spent some time watching rainfall on the green mountains. Munnar

This was one of our best trips and one of the reasons is the resort where we stayed. I am going to write about Prakkat Nature Resort in my next post. Stay tuned to know about a lovely place to stay in Munnar.

Munnar is full of greenery all around and this beautiful hill station is worth a visit at least once to experience the natural beauty of western ghats.
