A list of healthy recipes which I am sharing this month is not limited to any one cuisine. I have shared appetizers, desserts, and healthy drinks and snacks recipes with you all till now. Now it’s time for something different.

Today it’s a chutney recipe which is mainly made of two healthy ingredients – Dates and Jaggery.

There are a lot of childhood memories attached to jaggery. In winters we always used to have it at home and my earliest memory is having it with peanuts in those chilly winter evenings. Jaggery is basically unrefined sugar which is made from sugarcane juice. It has many health benefits and people consume it more in winters as it provides immunity and is freshly available.

  • It is a blood purifier and keeps the toxins away from the body.
  • It is rich in iron so helps to maintain haemoglobin levels and prevents anaemia.
  • Due to the presence of different vitamins and minerals, it helps to maintain body temperature.
  • It is a good source of energy but moderation is better as calories are similar to sugar.
  • It is rich in minerals like zinc, selenium and very good source of potassium. Completely free from fats.

Dates are other ingredients which we are using in making this chutney is equally healthy. Dates are a good source of energy too with many essential vitamins and minerals present in them. They are really good for digestive problems as they help to regulate the digestive process.

The good part is that they have a long shelf life and do not need any refrigeration. So, you can store them in airtight containers at room temperature.

Jaggery and date chutney is made with tamarind paste to give it the required tangy taste. It is a very simple recipe which can be ready easily in less than 30 minutes. You can have it as an accompaniment to any dish.

Jaggery and dates chutney tastes best if eaten fresh but you can store it in the refrigerator for 1-2 weeks.

This is a perfect accompaniment for any kind of dish. Jaggery and dates make it a healthy side dish. A very easy to make and yummy chutney.
Ingredients
  • 1 cup dates (seeds removed)
  • 2 tbsp. tamarind (seeds removed)
  • ½ cup jaggery (small pieces)
  • ½ tsp chilli powder
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • Salt to taste
Instructions
  1. Use seedless dates or you can remove seeds from the dates before using.
  2. Take out tamarind and remove seeds. Take tamarind paste or extract.
  3. Put them both in a pressure cooker.
  4. Now add the jaggery and almost 1 cup of water and pressure cook for 2 whistles.
  5. Open the cooker after steams escape and blend in a mixer to a smooth paste.
  6. Strain the mixture and add 1 cups of water, chili powder, cumin powder, salt and mix well.
  7. Refrigerate and use whenever required.
Notes
You can increase or decrease the tamarind or jaggery quantity on how sweet or tangy you want the chutney to be.

Dates are also sweet so too much jaggery can make the chutney sweeter. I like it little tangy so I increase my tamarind quantity while making it.
