Jammu and Kashmir is a state in North India. Jammu is called the winter capital of the state. River Tawi flows here and the Himalayas are the main mountain range. It has many famous temples and that is why its called Jammu, the city of temples.

My memories of a short trip to Jammu, the city of temples –

I remember visiting Jammu when I was some 6 years old and we halted at Jammu while going to Vaishno Devi. My second visit was immediately after marriage which was again while going to the famous shrine Vaishno Devi.

I still remember the trip with my parents and as we had to stop at Jammu as my father had some work, we kids got really bored. So, my mom told us a story of how it got its name. According to her, It got its name from a king called Jambhu and it is believed that many years ago, he saw a goat and a lion drinking water from the same river. He was so happy to see the peace in that particular area that he decided to make it a city. This is how Jammu got its name and also was declared a city.

We went to a few markets there and bought famous Kashmiri handicrafts, walnuts, almonds, and other dry fruits. There were many apple shops as it is grown here extensively. I remember planning to buy apples and we thought we will buy them while coming back from Vaishno Devi but we were so tired that we forgot.

About Jammu the city of temples –

Jammu is famous for many temples, gurudwaras and other religious shrines. It is a beautiful and calm city with friendly people. It has a few small hill stations very nearby to it, for example, Dalhousie and Patnitop.

The main places to see here are temples like Raghunath temple, Lakshmi Narayan and Shivalaya temple etc. Apart from these, there are few forts, palaces and an art gallery. You can plan a holiday in summers as it has good temperatures comparatively.

May people plan a trip to Kashmir if they are visiting Jammu. I have not got a chance to visit beautiful Kashmir yet but would love to visit this heaven on earth some time. Have you been to Jammu and Kashmir? Share your experience with us in comments below.
