Childhood is a time to be carefree, happy, and most importantly healthy. As a mom, I feel its parent’s responsibility to make sure the kids are healthy. You can just follow a few things and be alert as a parent.

How I make sure kids are happy and healthy

A few things which I do to ensure my kids are happy and healthy are –

  • Regular health check-ups with their paediatrician.
  • Not missing any vaccinations and getting them to put on time by following a schedule.
  • Staying happy as a mom as a happy mom means a happy child.
  • Be a role model and make sure you work out or stay physically active. Kids follow their parents. Teach them the significance of exercise.
  • Eating healthy. Cook healthy meals and avoiding junk food.

I am an anxious mom and the reason I worry too much is that I have always stayed away from my family. Having kids has taken my anxiety to completely another level. I used to always instruct my kids about what to do and what not to do. There were days when I would worry about my daughter while sitting at home when was out on a field trip with school.

As they say, a worried mom does better research than FBI, I am always researching and reading about the topics related to kids’ health and safety. But over the years, I realised that an anxious mom results in an anxious child. So, it’s better to relax and always consult your child’s paediatrician for any health-related matters.

Meningitis awareness

A few days back, I had a discussion with my daughter’s paediatrician and came to know about meningitis. We were talking about vaccinations when this topic came up. Like any other mom, I was confused and overwhelmed. So, after coming back from the doctor’s office, I read about it on the internet.  Finally, I also came to know a lot from Blogchatter’s sessions on Meningitis awareness.

I am just sharing what I came to know from my kids’ paediatrician and online sessions. It is a deadly disease which is of two types – Bacterial and Viral. Viral meningitis can kill within 24 hours and bacterial is caused by many different bacteria. The good news is that there are safe and effective vaccines available to protect against these.

How it spreads?

It spreads easily through sneezing, coughing, or using the same utensils as the infected person. It mostly affects young children and infants and thus awareness is key to combat this disease.

The awareness is important as there are some strains which are not preventable through vaccines. It is important to be alert and conscious. I immediately called up my paediatrician after my research to make sure my kids are protected against all types of bacterial meningitis. Please make sure you contact your paediatrician and ask him/her about the vaccine against meningococcal meningitis.

It’s always better to be smart than sorry later. I make sure my kids stay happy and healthy by staying updated about health-related matters. Hope you also make a right decision and make sure to get your kids regular health check-ups and vaccinations on time. Please share this information with other parents and spread this awareness. Let’s make sure our kids are happy and healthy.

In case you are unsure about your child’s need for protection and vaccination you must consult your pediatrician. For more information on meningococcal meningitis and its prevention check: http://www.comomeningitis.org/
