Dalhousie is a favourite hill-station and a much sought-after destination for travellers who seek tranquillity, mesmerizing views as well as a laid-back holiday. Of course, it cannot compete with the likes of Shimla or McLeodganj, however, it has a very appealing rustic charm which in itself is its USP.

For the uninitiated, Dalhousie is a teeny weeny hill station nestled amidst the peaks of Pir Panjal range facing the Himalayas, in the state of Himachal Pradesh. The town is spread across five hills and was established in the year 1854 during the British regime as a sanatorium for the British troops.

Off-beat hill-station

Unlike the other famous crowd-pulling hill-stations of Himachal, Dalhousie does not have the usual shopping stretches. The shopping arena is limited to just a lane of shops. This checks the inflow of unwanted peddlers and hawkers.

The colonial cottages and churches add to the architectural charm of the place. As the chunk of holidaying crowd moves towards the eastern side of Himachal, Dalhousie becomes more of a private resort for holiday seekers who revel in the lap of a salubrious surrounding.

Apart from its colonial connections, Dalhousie also has been home to Indian freedom fighters like Tagore and Subash Chandra Bose. Many Bengalis visit Dalhousie to pay homage to these freedom fighters who in themselves are a cult back in Bengal. It is surprising to know that because of the significance of this place, many Bengalis have settled down in and around Dalhousie.
