I still remember my grandparents and the time spent with them when I was small. They taught me few things which were great life lessons. One of my fondest memory is of listening stories from my grand mom and reading newspaper loudly as my grandfather had weak eye sight.
I strongly feel grandparents play an important role in a child’s life. Grandparents are the guiding lights of a family.
I lost both my parents a few years back and it is a void which will always be there. More than myself, I wanted them to be here for my kids.
I wish you were here, not for me but for your grandchildren,
I wish they could play with you and get to know you more.
I wish you could teach them things which I can’t.
I just wish that time with you would have been longer.
I never thought you will be gone so soon.
Why grandparent’s role is important in a child’s life?
- Support- Grandparents support their grandchildren even when parents do not agree to something. Children know that their grandparents will always stand beside them.
- Teachings– They can teach those things which parents can’t teach. The lessons, the learnings and the mentorship of a grandparent are completely different from anybody else.
- Family traditions– A grandparent can teach children a lot of things about family traditions and customs. Not only traditions but a grand mom can teach you skills like knitting, embroidery or even some kitchen tips and tricks.
- Fun Factor– Grandfather’s story times, games, humour in family stories and grandmothers yummy food. What else one needs? Grandparents are a lot of fun and can teach kids some things from their time like games which kids have never heard of and they no longer play.
- Family support– They are always there when you or your parents need them. There is nothing like love and care of grandparents. In fact, in many families, where both parents are working, kids are raised by the grandparents and they are a great support.
I believe grandparents are a great influence in a child’s life. Blessed are those who have their grandparents around them. This Grandparent’s day, we are going to remember all the happy memories with them with a smile.
Sometimes due to the generation gap, there are disagreements between parents and grandparents but their role as mentors, guide, supporters, and life savers cannot be denied.
Do you have any stories about your grandparents to share with us? Let me know in comments if you agree or disagree with me on all these points.
I look forward to hear from you how would you celebrate Grandparents Day. Do share a selfie with your grandparents on Sept. 10, 2017, on Twitter or Facebook with #LoveJatao & tag @blogadda to win a goodie from Parachute Advansed.

Agree with all of those points. We were fortunate enough to live with our grandparents, unfortunately my children aren’t. But we look forward to the summer vacations when they get to spend one whole month with them.

Yes Most of the families are nuclear these days and vacations is the only time when they meet their grandparents. Thanks Tulika.

In today’s nuclear family times, meeting and staying with grandparents is very important. They are children guiding lights. Like they say grandchildren are more dearer to them than own kids also, they are the spark in their lives which keeps them going.

That Ad made me sad and happy at the same time. I miss my grandparents now, when I think that I didn’t get the opportunity to spend enough time them. Just praying my parents will be around when I have kids.
September 10, 2017 at 12:47 pm
Such lovely reasons Deepa…I at times the nuclear set up that we are living in but sometimes its the situations that act as reasons for the set up.

So true Deepa, I remember my time spent with grandparents sure the best time of life. You post has definitely made me nostalgic. Love & Hugs

I agree with you on all points. Though I was not lucky to be with my grandparents, but my children had a long association with their grandparents, as my in-laws stayed with us. One more important thing that children learn by just observations is interpersonal relationships and to respect different points of views. There are bound to be disagreements when people of various age groups stay together. They learn how to sort things out and have patience.

Thanks Vandana. Very valid point you mentioned here.they do teach kids patience.

Grandparents truly play a vital role in shaping the life of grandkids. I only have my maternal grandmother left and she is really precious to me

Completely agree with all the points. The grandparents are the best people in the world to have a conversation with. I traveled and lived with my grandparents in summer vacation and those days were memorable for me. I strive to ensure that my children enjoy the same.

i agree woth you Deepa. I used to spend my vacation time at my grand parents home and those are my best childhood memories. My grand father used to buy me chocolates. I remeber the day I reached home, first thing I used to do is to open the fridge as I knew my dada would have bought an Amul Chocolate. My dadi would have cooked ladyfinger that day as it was my favourite. All my toys would have been cleaned and set up as I had last left it. I have beautiful memories. Thanks for writing this post on GrandParents Day.

Absolutely agree… I love the concept of a joint family! I feel the joy and happiness of a grandparent are such a special feeling and every child deserves to experience it!
Sadly, my grandparents are not more – but the memories are cherished and they live on! and someday, I hope to tell my children about my grand parents 🙂

Having Grandparents around our children is definitely a great boon. The benefits are mutual. While children learn to gain from their love, pampering and wisdom, having grandchildren around adds to the joys of grandparents.
Happy blogging Deepa.

Grandparents play such an important part in the lives of our kids, and ofcourse our lives too. Sometimes I wonder what life would be for my two girls without my parents and my in-laws. They have always brought forth the best in my girls.
I can understand your pain Deepa, but I’m sure the Kreative Mommy you are, you fill up their void beautifully.
Big Hugs <3

Grandparents are the epitome of learning. They teach many things which no book or school can yeah, and these are what that forms the base for future learnings. Great post Deepaji.

Do you know I insisted on finding a guy who would promise me to never leave his family so that our kids could grow up amidst their grandparents and have a childhood filled with wisdom and joy? My parents were surprised but when I told them the reason, they obliged.
Nothing and no one can replace grandparents.
I lost mine last year and miss them every time I have candies and cook “tinda” (funny memories!). I had my fondest memories with them and I can never thank them enough for introducing me to morals, etiquette, and our family’s culture through bedtime stories and mythological tales.
Your article summarises their indispensable role beautifully and I wish that kids from nuclear families knew what the importance of grands is.

Thanks Mansi. You took the right decision. 🙂

Your post made me realise how much I missed, Deepa, as my grandparents passed away when I was too young to remember them. My Naani was with me till i was a teen and I cherish those memories. Such a lovely post, and that is a lovely pic of your Dad and daughters.

very very true. Grandparents teach the kids, what we are not able too. I think it is mutual, grandparents get as much happiness as they give the grandkids. It’s a beautiful relationship 🙂
