St. Louis is a city in the state of Missouri in the USA. It is on the banks of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Apart from its baseball and beer, it is famous for a grand arch called Gateway arch. This arch is the world’s tallest arch and many tourists visit St. Louis to see it. It is 630 ft tall and a famous tourist attraction. St. Louis a Gateway Arch city is also popular for beautiful architecture.
The Gateway Arch is considered as a gateway to the west and is one of the iconic monument in the US. As some part of the city falls in another county, it comes under Illinois state too. So, St. Louis is a city which is in two states.
My memories of St.Louis –
We went to St. Louis in 2002 when my elder one was just 5 months old. We travelled a lot when we were in the US and this was her second outstation trip with us. One of our close friends were travelling with us and their son was almost the same age as our daughter. So, if you are following this series, you must have observed that we travelled a lot with our daughter and quite early too.
St. Louis has extreme winters and when we went there it was snowing heavily. We didn’t expect it to be that cold and as we were with infants, it was a challenge for us to go out and explore the city. It was a weekend getaway from Milwaukee, Wisconsin and 2 days were more than enough to cover the famous places.
The main attraction was the arch and we enjoyed our trip to the top of the arch. It is made up of stainless steel and a tram takes you up to the top of the arch. I remember how terrified I was to go in a tram with a baby but tram takes just 4 minutes to reach the top. So, in just 4 minutes, you are transported to the top of this 630 ft tall man-made monument. Although the tram gets little cramped due to a lot of people.
A riverside cruise takes you to the arch and the view from the top was worth visiting it. You can see the whole city from the top and the panoramic view is breathtaking. We also went to the Gateway arch national park and museum.
About St. Louis a Gateway Arch city-
St. Louis has many free tourist attractions like museums and monuments. The other places to see are –
- Louis Zoo
- City Museum
- Missouri botanical garden
- Science museum
- Forest park etc.
If you are a fan of beautiful architectural monuments and museums, St. Louis is the place to be. The summers here are hot and pleasant but winters are very cold with average minimum temperatures as low as -2 degrees c.
I remember it felt as if the arch was moving while we were looking outside for the view. So, it was an adventurous trip but an exciting one. Hope you are enjoying my posts about places I have been to and discovering some new ones too.
I am sharing my memories of different places from my travel list this April.

I grew up in Illinois. Right across the river from that Arch. St. Louis was a 70 trip straight west. Been there many many times.
I am at Transformed Nonconformist. I usually write humor pieces, but I am getting serious this month. I’m writing about people who have deeply impacted my life.

The ride up that huge arch will definitely scare me out of my wits but it would be totally worth it! It is such a good thing that you’ve travelled with your kids from such a young age, Deepa. I’ve seen many people put off their trips for this reason.
